ANDIS is a combined research and quality assurance project. In connection with a visit to your doctor or diabetes nurse, the following information is requested from each patient:

  • Swedish personal ID number
  • Name
  • Address
  • Time of diagnosis
  • Initial and current therapy of diabetes
  • Time of start of diabetes treatment
  • Height and weight
  • Possible diabetes during pregnancy
  • Information on diabetes in family members as well as information about the country of birth of the study person and his/ her parents.

At registration, blood samples are taken to determine presence of GAD-antibodies (usually present if type 1 diabetes) and measure C-peptide (a measure of own insulin production) and also for DNA-analysis. The DNA sample is used to classify the disease into subtypes and to study genetic causes of diabetes, diabetic complications and other disorders related to diabetes. One blood sample will be stored for possible future analysis. If the study participant previously have given consent for registration of his/her information in the Swedish National Diabetes Registry (NDR), the participant is asked whether this information can annually be linked to the ANDIS database.

ANDIS is an ongoing study, including more than 8800 patients (October 2013).
